Fifteen Million Merits

Contains spoilers for this episode.

Bing lives between a stationary bicycle and a bedroom covered in screens. Pedalling earns merits, which pay for food, entertainment and the right to skip adverts. He has inherited enough to avoid some daily irritations, but finds little worth buying. Hearing Abi sing offers him a different use for his savings: an entry ticket to Hot Shot, the talent competition promising an escape from their routine.

The ticket consumes nearly everything Bing has. At the audition, Abi drinks a compulsory substance and performs for judges who praise her voice but decline to make her a singer. They pressure her into joining a pornography channel instead. Bing's objections cannot reach her, and she accepts. Back in his room, he cannot afford to skip an advert featuring Abi. His anger leaves a broken screen and a shard of glass.

Bing saves for another audition, hides the shard and refuses the drink. Onstage he threatens to cut his throat and condemns the system selling their lives back to them. The judges treat his fury as a marketable performance and offer him a programme. He accepts, repeating his protest from a larger apartment with the glass held at his neck. A forest fills the view beyond his room, without settling whether that apparent freedom reaches beyond another screen.
