Gene befriends Marion after secretly disabling her mobility scooter and pretending to help. His story about a lost dog named Nippy brings him into her home, where her son Jeff recognizes him as Saul. Gene offers Jeff a department-store burglary in return for silence. He studies mall security by bringing guard Frank cinnamon rolls and timing his distraction. In a field, he recreates the store’s layout and trains Jeff to steal selected merchandise quickly. Buddy delivers a large box to the loading dock, concealing Jeff and providing space for the stolen goods.
During the burglary, Jeff slips and knocks himself unconscious. Gene improvises an emotional confession to keep Frank facing away from the monitors. Jeff eventually wakes, finishes loading the box and hides until the store opens. After their success, Gene explains that revealing his identity would expose Jeff’s own crimes. He demands that they never contact each other again, turning the theft into mutual protection against disclosure. Marion remains unaware of the arrangement and trusts Gene’s story about the dog. Gene returns to work in a brighter mood. During a break, he considers a flamboyant shirt reminiscent of Saul’s wardrobe in the department store, then leaves it behind without buying it.
