Monster Hunter: World Getting Started

Tracking is part of the hunt
World opens with a tracking loop that is easy to dismiss and worth learning. Scoutflies pick up tracks, and each monster is best hunted once you have enough research to see where it goes. Collect footprints, break parts, and capture monsters when you can — all three feed the research that makes the next hunt shorter.
Investigations discovered through tracks and hunts can add bronze, silver or gold reward boxes while imposing conditions such as a time limit or reduced faint count. Check those conditions before registering one.
Gear comes from the monster
The smithy uses gathered materials and monster parts to forge and upgrade equipment. Early on, follow one weapon tree far enough to understand it before spreading limited parts across several upgrades.
| What you want | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Better weapon | Monster parts and a smithy upgrade tier |
| Better armour | Forge appropriate pieces and upgrade them with Armor Spheres |
| More reward slots | Investigations from tracks |
| Help on a wall | SOS flare — other hunters join |
Use the tools the game gives you
The slinger is not decoration. Environmental traps, endemic life and several ammunition types can create openings or trigger hazards. Capturing can finish an eligible hunt sooner, but capture rewards and carve rewards differ for some materials; check the Hunter’s Notes or a specific material source rather than assuming one method is always better.
SOS flares allow other hunters to join many quests after their opening restrictions are cleared. Slinger and the Environment covers the field tools.
