Monster Hunter: World — Slinger and Environment
On this page
The slinger is a small tool with big effects
The slinger fires field ammunition and crafted pods. Stones and redpits can trigger parts of the environment or draw attention. Flash Pods can interrupt or ground susceptible monsters, although repeated use becomes less effective against some targets. Paratoads and sleeptoads are environmental creatures activated directly, rather than slinger ammunition.
The habit worth building is to grab ammo when you pass it. Trying to find a flash pod mid-fight is how you miss the window it was for.
The map is a weapon
Environmental traps such as boulder drops and vine snares can deal damage or create a knockdown when the monster is positioned correctly. Learn their locations while following Scoutflies and gathering tracks.
| Field element | Effect |
|---|---|
| Boulder or vine trap | Trap-specific damage or immobilisation |
| Flash pod | Interrupts or grounds a susceptible monster |
| Paratoad / sleeptoad | Area paralysis or sleep effect, including friendly hunters |
| Turf war | Monsters damage each other; use the opening to reposition or attack |
Capture instead of killing
When an eligible monster is weakened, it can be captured with a compatible trap and tranquilizers. Captures end the hunt without carving and provide capture rewards instead. The exact material chances vary, so check the material’s reward source when farming a specific drop.
Environmental damage, status creatures and capture tools can shorten a hunt when the target and locale support them. Getting Started covers the investigation economy.
