Use the Journal as Notes

On this page

Among the features the publisher lists are a Hunter’s Journal for tracking twisted foes, over 130 enemies, 30 epic bosses, and the Dream Nail, described as a way to leap into minds and uncover another side of the characters you meet.

The journal tells you what you have not seen

Four Hollow Knight habits: record what beat you, treat the Hunter's Journal as a to-do list, use the Dream Nail where a fight stalls, and expect many bosses.
The journal is both a record and a to-do list. Open the full image.

A record of every twisted foe you track down is also a checklist of what is still missing. With over 130 enemies named, the journal is the closest thing the game offers to a completion signal, and it is more reliable than memory.

Thirty bosses is the shape of the game

The store counts 30 epic bosses, which sets expectations: hitting a wall is the normal experience rather than evidence of a wrong turn. The useful question is whether you have the abilities and charms the fight is asking for.

Use the Dream Nail where progress stops

The Dream Nail is described as a way into the minds of the characters you meet, uncovering another side of them. That makes it both a story tool and a way to find what a region is hiding when a route seems finished.

Free content is part of the package

The publisher lists four free content updates - Hidden Dreams, The Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood and Godmaster - adding bosses, quests, charms and enemies. If the journal looks empty in an area you have cleared, a later update is usually why.

Notes are only useful if you act on them: re-route the kingdom and change your charms when the same fight keeps winning.
