Let S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and Perks Pick Your Build
On this page
Fallout 4 asks you to create a unique character with the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system and choose from hundreds of Perks. The publisher’s own examples of where that leads are a smooth-talking diplomat, a stealthy sniper, or a walking tank in Power Armor.
The examples sit at opposite ends
A diplomat and a sniper both avoid the stand-up fight, while a Power Armor tank does the opposite. Because the store offers all three as valid, the useful early decision is which end of that range you are building toward, and then letting the perk list follow.
Hundreds of perks means choosing what to skip
An open perk list is not a shopping spree. Every perk you take is a point not spent somewhere else, so a run with a clear plan usually outperforms one that samples. Check the perks that support your chosen style before you invest in the ones that merely sound useful.
Let your gear follow the build
Power Armor suits a character built to absorb damage; a stealth build needs the opposite. Since the store describes scavenging, crafting and customising as core to the game, gear should be chosen to reinforce the character you built rather than to patch over a build you did not commit to.
Whichever build you choose, decide how it fights in choosing between V.A.T.S. and real-time. Then support it with settlements as infrastructure.
