Choose Between V.A.T.S. and Real-Time

On this page

Fallout 4 gives you two ways to fight: the dynamic Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, which the publisher says slows down time so you can target enemies with cinematic precision, or taking the fight into your own hands with real-time gunplay.

V.A.T.S. is a planning tool

Four-step Fallout 4 combat decision: meet enemies, either slow time with V.A.T.S. or aim in real time, then spend perks on the style you use.

Slowing time turns a crowded fight into a sequence of decisions rather than a reflex test. Because the official description presents it as cinematic precision rather than as a cheat, it suits players who would rather read a fight and choose targets than track enemies in real time.

Real-time rewards different perks

If you fight with your own aim, the perks that pay off are the ones that improve how you shoot, move and position. Spending heavily on the targeting system while never slowing time is the most common way to end up with a character who feels weaker than the build suggested.

Use both where each is strongest

The two systems coexist in the description rather than replacing one another. Opening with slowed targeting and finishing in real time, or the reverse, is a legitimate read of a fight - just make sure your perks support the half you rely on when the situation turns bad.

The character behind the weapon is chosen first: S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and perks. Behind the fight, supplies come from settlements as infrastructure.
