Practice Last Hits and Denies Without Losing the Lane

Understand Last Hits and Denies
If your hero lands the killing blow on an enemy creep, you earn its last-hit gold. Nearby allied heroes share experience when an enemy dies, so you can gain experience without finishing the creep yourself. These are separate rewards. Valve’s tutorial text, hosted by SteamTracking
To attempt a deny with default bindings, press A and left-click an eligible low-health allied creep. You must land the killing blow; ordering an attack alone does not secure the deny. This removes the enemy’s opportunity to last-hit that creep. Valve’s lane tutorial
A denied lane creep also gives nearby enemies reduced experience. It does not remove every reward they can collect from the wave. This guide concerns ordinary lane creeps; other units have their own rules. Valve’s lane-creep deny notes
First Exercise: Watch, Then Strike
Use Demo Hero to practise last hitting without a live opponent. Valve provides it for trying abilities and last-hit practice. Demo Hero overview
Watch several creeps before attacking. Choose one low-health enemy creep, issue a deliberate attack, and observe what happens:
- It survives your hit: on a similar target, wait longer before committing.
- Your attack finishes it: you secured the last hit.
- It dies before your hit lands: begin the next attempt earlier.
Repeat with the same hero so you can recognise its attack timing. Use what happened to adjust the next attempt instead of choosing a fixed point on the health bar. If attacks from several units are confusing you, follow one creep through the exchange before trying again.
For example, if your hit leaves a creep alive and another unit finishes it, note the early attempt. Do not respond by attacking every creep faster; watch for the next comparable opportunity and delay that attack.
Practise Denies Separately
Once you can judge enemy last hits, run a separate practice block for allied creeps. Check your attack-command binding, select a low-health ally, and watch whether your attack actually finishes it. Separating the blocks makes it easier to tell whether the problem is timing or selecting the wrong unit.
Then try both actions in a bot match. Add enemy pressure gradually to the task rather than expecting your quiet practice timing to transfer immediately.
Keep the Attempt Safe
Valve’s lane tutorial advises staying close enough to last-hit while avoiding excessive enemy attack damage. For this beginner exercise, step back when a contested creep would put you in danger. Check your health and enemy positions before approaching the next one. Valve’s lane-positioning guidance
In a shared lane, agree who is collecting farm. If your partner is taking the last hits, practise coordinating around that plan instead of attacking the same creep. A support can rehearse personal timing in Demo Hero without competing for lane gold during a match.
