The Last Colony
John Perry and Jane Sagan are offered the leadership of a new colony called Roanoke, drawn from the first ten human worlds, and they accept and travel out with Zoë and her two alien protectors.
About
The Last Colony is a science fiction novel by the American writer John Scalzi, published in 2007. It is the third book set in his Old Man's War universe and, like the first, it is narrated by John Perry.
Perry and Jane Sagan, a former Ghost Brigade soldier who is a clone of Perry's first wife, have settled on the planet Huckleberry when they are asked to lead Roanoke, a colony to be made up of people from the first ten extraterrestrial human settlements. They talk it over, accept, and set out with Zoë, the girl in their care, and Zoë's Obin escorts Hickory and Dickory, who regard her with something close to religious awe.
On arrival the settlers find that Roanoke is not where they were told it would be. A member of the Colonial Defense Forces' special forces, adapted to live in space, has attached himself to the outside of their craft, and he explains that the colony ship has been sabotaged past repair and that the only option left is to land and begin building. The book was a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Novel, and Perry's story continues in later volumes of the series.
