Star Wars - Death Troopers
The Imperial prison barge Purge is carrying five hundred of the galaxy's most dangerous convicts when its engines fail somewhere remote and empty.
About
Death Troopers is a novel by the American writer Joe Schreiber, published by Del Rey in 2009. It is a horror story set in the Star Wars galaxy, and it concerns an Imperial prison ship rather than the fleets and Jedi of the films.
The Purge is a prison barge carrying rebels, killers, thieves and other convicts to an Imperial destination when it breaks down in a part of space with nothing in it. Its crew and prisoners are left waiting for a rescue that may not come, and the only other vessel within reach is a Star Destroyer found derelict and silent. A party is sent across to take what parts they can, and half of them return, which is the moment the book's actual danger arrives on the barge with them. Among the prisoners are two brothers, and their story runs beside the wider collapse of order on the ship as the officers lose their ability to keep anyone in a cell.
Schreiber writes the book as a siege inside a sealed environment, and it belongs to the strand of Star Wars publishing that used the setting for horror and crime rather than space battle.
