On Basilisk Station
Commander Honor Harrington has embarrassed a powerful officer, and the reward is command of a light cruiser posted to Basilisk Station, a picket assignment nobody wants, on a ship whose weapons do not work.
About
On Basilisk Station is a science fiction novel by the American writer David Weber, published in 1993 and the first of his Honor Harrington series.
The Star Kingdom of Manticore is drifting towards war with the People's Republic of Haven, and the station at Basilisk is too unimportant for anyone to reinforce. Honor is given a demoralised crew, an over-age cruiser with a broken armament and a system whose only industry is smuggling, and she decides to do the job she was given anyway. The novel is as much about the management of a ship as about the fighting: she has to win over her officers, work out who is profiting from the traffic and get a neglected navy to function with the people and equipment available. Weber writes tactics and logistics in detail, and his heroine is a professional who does not get to choose her orders.
The book introduced a series that grew to many volumes, and it sets up the naval war that drives most of them.
