Night of the Living Dummy II
Amy's ventriloquist dummy, Dennis, keeps losing his head, so she asks her family for a new one.
About
Night of the Living Dummy II is a Goosebumps novel by R. L. Stine, published in 1995. It is a sequel to the first dummy book in the series and reuses the same antagonist.
The story starts with a practical problem. Amy's dummy keeps losing its head, which gives her an acceptable reason to ask for a replacement, and her father finds Slappy in a pawnshop. Slappy is described as ugly, so the purchase is presented as a compromise rather than a mistake, and Amy begins to enjoy practising with him before anything goes wrong. The replacement is found in a pawnshop and is ugly rather than appealing, so the arrangement of cause and effect stays deliberately ordinary: a child asks for a new dummy and is given one.
The escalation is deliberate and patterned on the first book, since the novel tells the reader that what is happening is just like what happened before. That structure makes the sequel depend on the reader knowing the earlier title, and the subjects note ghost stories alongside ventriloquism, which reflects how the series mixes hauntings, dolls and everyday family settings in the same short book.
