Jim & Me

Dan Gutman2008Time travel

Stosh is surprised when Bobby Fuller, the boy who has always been his enemy, asks him for a favour: to take him back in time to meet Jim Thorpe, the Olympic champion who lost his medals after a scandal and never recovered his fame.

About

Jim & Me is a novel for young readers by the American writer Dan Gutman, published in 2008. It is the eighth of his Baseball Card Adventures, in which a boy who collects cards travels into the sport's past.

Stosh is taken aback when Bobby Fuller, a boy who has been his enemy, asks a favour of him. Bobby wants to go back in time to meet Jim Thorpe, the Native American athlete who was the greatest of his era until his Olympic medals were taken away in a scandal, and who went on to play professional baseball and football without ever regaining the fame he had lost.

The two boys set off on a journey that is meant to restore Thorpe's reputation, and on the way they meet Christy Mathewson, John McGraw and the rest of the New York Giants. The book mixes the history of the sport with the mechanics of time travel, and it depends on two enemies having to cooperate in a period that neither of them understands.
