Honus & Me
Joe Stoshack loves baseball and is not good at it, which is most of what he knows about himself.
About
Honus and Me is a novel for young readers by the American writer Dan Gutman, published in 1997 and the first of his Baseball Card Adventures.
Joe knows the history of the game better than anybody in his class and cannot hit, which makes the attic find complicated: the card is worth a fortune, and he has to decide what to do with it while a dealer tries to buy it for ten dollars by claiming it is somebody else. That night he falls asleep holding it and wakes in the presence of Honus Wagner, who turns out to be a man rather than a legend, and the two of them spend a day together talking about the game and about what a person is worth. The book takes its time-travel premise seriously enough to keep the period detail accurate, and it finishes with a factual note from the author about Wagner's career.
It began a series in which the same boy meets figures from baseball history, and it was one of the author's earliest books.
