About
Golden Son is a 2015 science fiction novel by the American author Pierce Brown and the second book in his Red Rising trilogy. The sequel to Red Rising continues to follow the lowborn Darrow's plan to destroy the Society from within. It debuted at number six on the New York Times bestseller list and won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award for science fiction. It followed Red Rising in 2014, and it appeared in January 2015.
It is followed by the third novel in the series, Morning Star, published in February 2016.
The book's cast is organised around the factions and houses of the ruling class, with Darrow and his companions serving as lancers to one of the great houses while the political situation at the top of the Society becomes more dangerous. Darrow is a lowborn Red who was remade as a Gold, and this volume is where that position is both most useful and most dangerous. The politics of the great houses supply the machinery, since the Society's leadership is decided by contests between them rather than by succession.
