About
City of Ashes is a fantasy novel by the American writer Cassandra Clare, published in 2008. It is the second book of The Mortal Instruments, an urban fantasy series set in New York.
Clary Fray discovered in the first book that she can see the supernatural inhabitants of her city and that she belongs to the Shadowhunters, a body of warriors with angelic blood who keep order among what they call Downworlders. Her mother is unconscious and cannot be woken, the Shadowhunter who is hunting for a set of artefacts has already been inside the Institute where the warriors live, and the people Clary has to work with include her brother and the boy she is trying not to think about. Clare sets the story in contemporary New York and writes it at the pace of a thriller, with the city, its clubs and its buildings used as the ground on which the two sides meet.
The series ran to six books, and this one was among the ten best teen books selected by YALSA in 2009.
