A Murder Is Announced
A murder is announced in advance in the personal column of a local newspaper, with a time and an address, and the people named in the advertisement treat it as a joke until the evening in question arrives and something happens that is no joke at all.
About
A Murder Is Announced is a mystery novel by the English writer Agatha Christie, first published in 1950. It features her detective Jane Marple.
The murder in question is announced in advance in a local newspaper in a small village, along with a time and an address, and the people concerned take it for a prank until the evening named in the advertisement comes around and something happens that is not funny in the least.
Miss Marple is staying at a spa hotel in a nearby town for treatment at the time, and she works on the case with Inspector Craddock of the county police. The book was promoted heavily on publication as Christie's fiftieth, a figure that could only be arrived at by counting both the British and the American short story collections, and reviewers received it well, describing the plot as ingenious as ever and the murderer as run to earth in a brilliantly conducted parlour game. It was the last of her novels to be written at the rate of one a year.
