Use Windfall Avoid Against High, Low and Straight Attacks

On this page

Windfall’s Avoid uses the right stick to slip an incoming attack. Equip Windfall before using these directions; the same stick triggers different abilities with other Combat Styles. Windfall is one of the styles available when creating a character.

Lock on before using the stick

With default PS4 controls, tap R1 to lock onto an opponent. The right stick now controls your style ability. Outside combat it controls the camera. Don’t hold R2 while avoiding: R2 plus the stick changes your stance instead.

Choose the direction to match the attack:

  • Push down to duck a high attack.
  • Push up to jump over a low attack.
  • Push left or right to sidestep a straight attack.

A sweeping horizontal attack can catch a sidestep. A mid-height attack won’t pass harmlessly above a duck or below a jump. Read the path of the strike before committing to a direction.

Windfall while locked on: right stick down ducks high attacks, up jumps low attacks, and left or right sidesteps straight attacks. Sweeping attacks can catch sidesteps.
Avoid needs the right direction and timing. Release R2 first. Open the full image.

Time it for the incoming hit

Use Avoid as the strike arrives. A successful avoid restores stamina and briefly slows the attacker. Use that opening for a quick attack or to regain control of the exchange. The slowdown is short; it doesn’t promise enough time for every heavy move in your deck.

If the strike still connects, check both timing and direction. If the camera moves, lock on. If your stance changes, release R2. Circle is the separate manual dodge input and doesn’t replace Windfall’s right-stick command.

Defending successfully also helps you learn unfamiliar attacks. For your response after an avoid, check the sequence available from your current stance so your first attack is deliberate.
