Season six follows the Twilight as Ares adjusts to mortal life and Eve seeks peace with the Amazons. Xena returns to the Norse lands with Gabrielle, Beowulf and Brunnhilda to face the damage from her warlord years. Grinhilda became a monster when she put on the Rheingold Ring to stop Xena; years later, Xena discovers that Grindl, another monster attacking the group, is Grinhilda’s son. Xena kills Grindl and recovers the ring, but wearing it erases her memories. Brunnhilda protects Gabrielle inside a ring of fire. A year later Xena regains her memory and Gabrielle, restores Grinhilda to human form and returns the stolen gold.
In “When Fates Collide,” Caesar changes history by seizing the Fates’ Loom: he rules Rome with Xena as his empress, while Gabrielle becomes a playwright. As Xena faces crucifixion in that altered world, Gabrielle reaches the Loom and burns it, restoring their original lives. Later, a monk brings the pair to Japan, where the spirit Yodoshi holds the souls of people killed in a fire tied to Xena’s past.
Xena recounts how she met Akemi during her warlord years and later set fire to Higuchi after its townspeople scattered Akemi’s ashes. The blaze killed forty thousand people, whose souls Yodoshi trapped. Xena and Gabrielle fight to free them; Xena deliberately dies so she can defeat Yodoshi as a spirit, while Gabrielle retrieves and burns her body. A fountain could restore Xena, but she stops Gabrielle: the souls need justice, so Xena must remain dead for them to be at peace. Gabrielle sails on with Xena’s ashes and the chakram.
