Season four opens with Xena grieving Gabrielle and searching the Siberian spirit world for her companion. Her fight with the shaman Alti leads her to the Amazons’ land of the dead, where she learns Gabrielle survived the fall into Dahak’s lava pit. They reunite against Gabrielle’s daughter Hope and the Destroyer, then resume travelling together. Xena is later imprisoned for her old crimes, while her efforts to keep peace between rival communities force her to weigh justice against violence.
In India, Gabrielle is hailed as a healer after a demon leaves a magician’s assistant and enters her. Xena suspects the source of Gabrielle’s new powers; she discovers that the spirit Tataka has possessed her, while Eli is the true healer. Xena fights Gabrielle’s possessed body as Eli performs the exorcism, freeing her friend. After a widow’s rescue, visions show their future reincarnations: Xena as a pacifist and Gabrielle as a male warrior facing Alti reborn. Gabrielle commits to nonviolence, but breaks her vow when Caesar’s soldiers threaten Xena.
Back in Greece, Gabrielle becomes Amazon queen after Brutus kills Ephiny. Callisto returns from the dead to corrupt Xena and help Caesar seize power, but Xena’s attempt to stop him ends with Caesar’s soldiers capturing and crucifying both women in “The Ides of March.” The final episode then jumps to modern life: Annie believes she was Xena, but past-life memories reveal that Harry is Xena and Dr. Mattie is Gabrielle. Annie discovers that she was Joxer. When Ares tests Harry, she helps defeat him and leaves Harry and Mattie to recognize their connection.
