Xena returns toward Amphipolis intent on answering for her past, but her rescue of Potidaea from Draco introduces Gabrielle, who leaves her village to travel beside her. Early adventures test the new pair against warlords and supernatural dangers, and Gabrielle moves from eager observer to an active partner: when Xena is poisoned, Gabrielle disguises herself as the warrior princess to save Salmoneus. In Hooves and Harlots, the dying Amazon Terreis gives Gabrielle her right of caste, tying her to the Amazon nation.
Xena's former life keeps intruding. Ares tries to draw her back into command, while Callisto pursues her for the deaths of her family during Xena's earlier campaigns. Xena also returns to Amphipolis and confronts the history of her family's destruction, joining her brother Toris against Cortese, the raider responsible. Across these journeys, Gabrielle's stories and refusal to treat every enemy as a target give her a role of her own, while Xena's fighting skills remain useful and morally complicated.
The final episode places them amid a civil war, where they shelter in a healing temple and try to stop the fighting. Xena turns the temple into a triage ward, treats the casualties and delivers Ephiny's centaur baby; Gabrielle helps and then risks herself to retrieve a child. Wounded after sparing her attacker, Gabrielle stops breathing. Xena refuses to let her go and revives her with chest compressions. The season ends with Gabrielle alive and leaving the temple with Xena.
