Bjorn returns to Kattegat with Halfdan as Lagertha prepares for Harald and Ivar's attack. His arrival gives her another experienced commander, but Halfdan's presence raises a question about which brother he will support. Lagertha and Bjorn speak more privately about her rule and the life she might want beyond it. For now she continues gathering allies, including King Svase and his daughter Snaefrid, while the defenders consider how Ivar might strike.
Bjorn is attracted to Snaefrid and asks Lagertha to arrange an introduction. Torvi recognises that her relationship with him has changed and allows him to pursue another woman. Ubbe's marriage is also strained: Margrethe urges him to let the fighting clear a path to Kattegat's throne. Her hopes depend on the deaths of people he has chosen to defend. Across the divide, Ivar consults Heahmund about battle and questions him about fate, belief and his brothers.
Alfred reaches Lindisfarne to ask about Athelstan's life among the monks. He challenges their use of Latin and argues for a faith that ordinary people can understand. In Iceland, Floki wants a community that can govern itself without a ruler. Eyvind doubts that promise and suspects that Floki intends to command them anyway. The settlers have reached their destination, but disagreements over authority remain. At Kattegat, both armies finish preparing without yet settling the war in battle.
