Ragnar returns from Paris badly wounded and dreams of reaching Valhalla, only to see its gates close before him. He remains alive in Kattegat, where his weakness encourages Aslaug to ask the Seer whether she might rule after him. Bjorn publicly arrests Floki for killing Athelstan. Ragnar resents being forced to judge his old friend and tells Bjorn that the decision was his to make.
Floki is chained in the village, where Helga visits him and hears his plea for help escaping. Ragnar confronts him over the murder, rejecting his claim that he acted only for the gods. Bjorn leaves for the wilderness to prove he can survive alone. In Hedeby, Kalf proposes sharing power with Lagertha, then uses a gathering to expose and slaughter the men opposing her. Lagertha kills the wounded Einar.
In Francia, Rollo marries Gisla, who openly despises the husband chosen for her. Their wedding night ends without the marriage being consummated, despite the court's expectations. Rollo also faces opposition from the Vikings left behind near Paris. Rather than return to their side, he leads Frankish soldiers against their camp and has his former companions killed, committing himself to the people his brother expects to raid again.
