Ragnar delays the attack on Hexham until Sunday, using what he has learned about Christian worship to catch the town together in church. He tells its priest that people who do not resist will be spared. During the raid, Lagertha intervenes when Knut assaults a Saxon woman. He turns on her, and she kills him when he tries to rape her. Ragnar later claims responsibility for the death to protect his wife.
The raiders fight their way back to their ship against Northumbrian soldiers, while King Aelle learns more about the men attacking his kingdom. At home, Athelstan struggles with the children and with his anger toward a God who has allowed his fellow monks to be killed or enslaved. When Ragnar returns, Haraldson has him arrested for Knut's killing. The Earl also approaches Rollo with wealth and the prospect of marrying his daughter.
At the trial, Lagertha says that she killed Knut, but Haraldson insists on pursuing Ragnar. Rollo swears that Ragnar's account of the attempted rape is true, preventing the Earl from securing the punishment he wants. Ragnar is freed and celebrates with his companions, only for armed men to attack them afterward. The acquittal has left the dispute unresolved. Haraldson consults the Seer about the violence ahead, while Ragnar prepares himself for the danger still surrounding his family.
