Leland tells Donna and James that Maddy has already left town, concealing the murder from the friends who came to say goodbye. He hides her body among his golfing equipment and sets out in his car. Ben remains in custody while Jerry tries to organise his defence. Ben says he was with Catherine when Laura died, but the woman who could support his account is believed missing after the fire. Pete then brings a recording of Catherine's voice: she is alive and willing to bargain over the property Ben tried to take. Ben's apparent escape route becomes another way for Catherine to control him.
Bobby listens to Leo's hidden recording and recognises Ben arranging the mill arson, giving him material for a blackmail attempt. Norma's mother arrives with her new husband Ernie, who privately turns out to know Hank from prison. Gerard escapes his guard and is found again, but MIKE does not identify Ben as BOB. Cooper is increasingly uneasy about keeping Ben as the central suspect, while Truman insists that the tangible evidence still requires action. On the road, Leland tries to redirect Cooper toward Ben and comes close to exposing the body in his car. The day closes with a devastating discovery: Maddy's body has washed ashore wrapped in plastic, repeating the circumstances of Laura's discovery.
