Jones tries to strangle Truman as he lies in bed, but he wakes and overpowers her. The attack returns him to the investigation, still burdened by grief and a severe hangover. Doc Hayward tells Cooper that Earle visited Donna, and Gordon Cole arrives with information linking Earle to Project Blue Book and the medication Gerard used. Gordon also restores Cooper to the FBI. An apparently thoughtful bonsai delivered to Truman's office conceals Earle's listening device, allowing him to hear their discussions. At his cabin, Earle chooses photographs of Audrey, Donna and Shelly and connects his next move to the coming Miss Twin Peaks contest.
Donna and Audrey spy on Ben's meeting with Eileen Hayward, hearing enough to deepen Donna's doubts about her family's past. Gordon discovers that he can hear Shelly clearly, even without the usual shouting. Cooper combines the Log Lady's and Briggs's marks on a napkin, and Annie recognises the design from Owl Cave. The discovery sends Cooper, Truman, Hawk and Andy into the cave. An owl disrupts their search, and Andy's pick exposes a stone lever carrying another symbol. Cooper later talks with Annie about returning to life after the convent and her fear of being hurt again. After the officers leave the cave, Earle enters and reverses the lever, causing the wall to move.
