Geralt and Ciri's journey to the Temple of Melitele is attacked by a chernobog. Roach is mortally wounded, forcing Geralt to end his companion's suffering before killing the creature. At the temple, Nenneke offers Ciri the chance to learn about her power. Jarre shows her the library while Geralt seeks advice about a girl hunted by enemies whose ambitions reach far beyond any single monster. Nenneke cannot give him an easy way to make Ciri safe.
Yennefer reaches the same temple seeking the girl promised to the Deathless Mother. Finding Geralt alive brings an emotional reunion, followed by an introduction to his Child of Surprise. The brief meeting gives way to another attack. Rience and the Michelet brothers pursue Ciri through the temple, and Geralt leaves her with Yennefer while he fights them. Trapped in a room, Yennefer coaches Ciri through opening a portal. They escape together as Geralt sees them disappear, unable to stop their departure.
Rience has already attacked Kaer Morhen and stolen the vial made from Ciri's blood, bringing his employers closer to her abilities. Triss decides to take her warning to Tissaia. In Cintra, Fringilla helps Francesca deliver a living daughter, strengthening their personal bond while the elves celebrate. Cahir's return and the approaching emperor make Fringilla's authority among the Nilfgaardian officers increasingly uncertain.
