Geralt returns to Cintra as Nilfgaard's army approaches, determined to claim responsibility for his Child of Surprise. Calanthe distrusts him and tries to hand over another girl in Ciri's place. He discovers the deception, but his attempt to take the real princess fails when he is imprisoned. The return to the invasion reveals that Geralt was inside the city during its destruction. By the time Calanthe orders him released to protect Ciri, he has already escaped his cell.
Geralt searches the burning city without finding her. These events close the distance between his earlier travels and Ciri's flight, rather than bringing the pair together. In the princess's present, a woman offers her food and shelter, but Ciri steals a horse and rides away. Boys she knew in Cintra find her alone and decide to sell her to the pursuers. Cornered by familiar faces, she speaks in a strange voice and releases another burst of power.
Yennefer tries to reconnect with Istredd, only to learn that he will not abandon his work for her. Vilgefortz brings her back to Aretuza, where she challenges the promises made to the new students. The mages debate whether to oppose Nilfgaard, with Fringilla defending the empire. Their refusal to act together leaves Tissaia seeking volunteers for resistance, while Yennefer remains angry at the school and uncertain about joining her.
