Melbourne welcomes the Marines with crowds and a chance to sleep away from Guadalcanal. Leckie follows Stella Karamanlis through the city and receives an invitation to her family's home. Her parents offer meals, company and a bed, asking him to help around the house. He and Stella begin a relationship, and he spends much of his leave with her. A local soldier's funeral brings the war into the neighbourhood even while the Marines are resting.
Basilone and J.P. Morgan get into a drunken fight after an Australian soldier insults them and Manny Rodriguez. Soon afterward, Chesty Puller tells Basilone that his actions on Guadalcanal have earned the Medal of Honor. The ceremony brings recognition he has difficulty sharing with the friend who died. His next orders send him to America to sell war bonds, separating him from Morgan and the men with whom he fought.
Training interrupts Leckie's time with Stella. After a long march back to camp, he returns to find that she wants their relationship to end: she cannot face loving him and then hearing he has been killed. Leckie responds by drinking and pulls a pistol on an officer after taking over Chuckler's guard duty. Both men are arrested. Leckie's punishment includes a demotion and reassignment, and the episode closes with the Marines leaving Melbourne while Basilone arrives in America.
