Joel and Ellie travel west in Bill’s truck. At an overnight stop, Joel keeps watch despite telling Ellie they are safe. On the road, he explains how Tommy joined the Fireflies and eventually left them. A blocked highway forces them through Kansas City, where Joel recognizes a man’s plea for help as an ambush. Their truck crashes into a laundromat. Joel kills two attackers, but another, Bryan, overpowers him. Ellie shoots Bryan with the handgun she took from Bill’s house. Joel sends her out of sight before killing the wounded man, who pleads for his life and calls for his mother.
Kathleen, leader of the resistance that recently overthrew FEDRA, believes Henry is involved in the attackers’ deaths. She blames him for informing on her brother and orders a citywide search. Perry shows her Henry’s abandoned hiding place and a basement floor disturbed by something underneath. Kathleen insists they find Henry first and conceal the other threat. Meanwhile, Joel recognizes that Ellie should not have had to save him. He returns her gun and teaches her how to hold it. They climb a high-rise to plan their escape, then settle down behind a broken-glass alarm. Ellie’s jokes finally make Joel laugh. He wakes to find a man and a boy holding them at gunpoint.
