Season 2

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Fred’s plans to get ahead or have fun repeatedly collide with the people closest to him. He and Barney try songwriting with Hoagy Carmichael, take on private-detective work that entangles them with a gangster, and attempt to improve Fred’s prospects at the quarry through night classes. A season-long story does not replace these separate adventures: one week Fred is juggling work and football with his studies, another he is trying to keep a poker win from Wilma, and later he and Barney are swept into a prank contest that their wives try to stop before it escalates.

The season also gives Fred and Wilma a pointed revisit to their marriage. When they return to Rock Mountain Inn to renew their vows, a man at the justice-of-the-peace’s office tells them their first ceremony was invalid. Wilma asks Fred to repeat the gestures of their courtship before she will marry him again; he initially resists, and they separate temporarily, with Fred staying at the Rubbles’ home. He finally admits he has been taking her for granted and asks her properly. The innkeeper later explains that the man was joking about the judge: Fred and Wilma were married all along, and they renew their vows anyway. Other stories return the pair to their familiar partnership, with the Rubbles beside them through work, lodge and household mishaps.
