Hopper breaks into Hawkins Lab and finds a child's room before reaching the strange growth in its underground chamber. Guards catch and drug him. He wakes at home and searches until he finds a listening device, confirming that the people inside the lab are watching him. Will's funeral proceeds while the boys believe their friend is still alive elsewhere. They ask Mr. Clarke how someone could enter a parallel dimension. His explanation gives them a way to imagine crossing between worlds, and Dustin proposes following the magnetic disturbance from a gate with their compasses. Eleven knows the route is dangerous and quietly changes the needles' direction.
Lucas discovers her interference and accuses her of deceiving them. Mike defends her, the boys fight, and Eleven throws Lucas across the junkyard with her powers. He wakes and walks away; Eleven also disappears, leaving the group divided. Joyce discovers that Lonnie is interested in compensation from the quarry and orders him out. Hopper visits her and confirms that the body was fake. Nancy and Jonathan search the woods for the creature. A wounded deer is dragged away before they can put it out of its misery. Following its blood, Nancy finds an opening in a tree and crawls through. On the other side, she sees the monster feeding. A snapped branch alerts it, and Jonathan hears her scream without being able to find her.
