Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Captain Kathryn Janeway takes Voyager into the Badlands to find a missing Maquis ship, with Starfleet security officer Tuvok secretly embedded among the rebels and former Maquis Tom Paris helping the search. A powerful alien array sweeps both crews across the galaxy into the Delta Quadrant, where the Caretaker has been bringing strangers to protect the Ocampa. When the dying alien cannot continue that duty, Janeway must choose between using the array to send her people home and preventing the Kazon from taking its technology. She orders the array destroyed, losing their only immediate route back and beginning a journey measured in decades.
The Maquis vessel is lost in the fighting, so its surviving crew join Voyager under Janeway and Chakotay becomes her first officer. The combined crew learns to work across old loyalties and different habits while seeking supplies, safer routes and any way to shorten the trip. Janeway appoints B’Elanna Torres chief engineer after she proves capable of solving the ship’s technical crises, while Tuvok’s strict Starfleet approach repeatedly meets resistance from Maquis who still see themselves as fighters rather than conventional officers.
That tension sharpens when a damaged Kazon ship is found carrying equipment taken from Voyager. The investigation exposes Seska, one of Chakotay’s former Maquis, as a Cardassian operative who has been secretly aiding the Kazon; she escapes to their ship as Janeway withdraws from the superior force. In the season’s final story, Tuvok trains four Maquis who have resisted Starfleet procedure. A shipwide systems failure forces the trainees to work together to save one another, giving their uneasy integration a practical step forward.
