Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
A Bajoran coup attempt opens the season when the anti-alien Circle targets the Federation presence on Bajor and Deep Space Nine. Sisko stays with a reduced crew after Starfleet orders an evacuation, while Kira and Dax try to carry evidence of the conspiracy to Bajor’s government. The plot reveals Cardassian involvement behind the unrest; the coup is defeated and the station remains a Starfleet outpost, but Bajor’s recovery is still contested by its own leaders and its former occupier.
The season keeps testing that fragile balance beyond the coup. In “The Maquis,” Sisko learns that Federation settlers abandoned inside the Cardassian border have organized armed resistance, and that his friend Calvin Hudson has joined them. Cardassian weapons smuggling complicates the dispute, forcing Sisko to try to stop retaliation without pretending the settlers’ grievances are invented. Meanwhile, Odo pursues clues about his origins, and Garak’s illness brings Bashir closer to the tailor whose stories never quite agree.
The final trip into the Gamma Quadrant begins as a father-son camping outing for Sisko and Jake, with Nog and Quark along. A woman named Eris claims the Jem’Hadar are pursuing her, but the Dominion soldiers capture her, Sisko, and Quark; Jake and Nog escape. The Federation ship Odyssey arrives, yet the Jem’Hadar destroy it during its retreat and show they will enforce the Dominion’s boundary by force. Back on the station, Quark recognizes that Eris is a Vorta agent who used the encounter to test Starfleet.
