Philippi

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Octavian and Antony prepare to surprise Brutus and Cassius with their reunited armies. They also agree to kill supporters of their enemies in Rome and take their wealth. Vorenus distributes the orders to the Aventine gangs, allowing them to loot the victims' houses. Pullo receives Cicero's name, and the statesman's attempt to warn Brutus about the new alliance never reaches its destination. Pullo meets him in the countryside and carries out the execution. Jocasta's family is also destroyed in the purge, leaving her to seek Atia's protection. The victors' preparations turn private fortunes and friendships into grounds for a death sentence.

Vorenus hopes to use part of the money to feed the poor and build support for the collegium. Pullo feels stranded away from military life, though Eirene's pregnancy gives him a future to anticipate. Memmio starts drawing Vorena the Elder towards one of his men, while Agrippa and Octavia begin an affair they know cannot become an accepted marriage. In Greece, Brutus learns too late that Antony has joined Octavian. He refuses to retreat and commits his army at Philippi. Cassius falls during the fighting, and the defeat leaves Brutus without a cause he can save. He dismisses his surviving men, removes his armour and walks into the enemy ranks to be killed.
