It names Octavian as his heir and adopted son, giving the young man both a new claim and a reason to stay. Brutus accepts it despite warnings about leaving Antony alive, and Antony promptly kills Quintus Pompey outside the house.
Vorenus is consumed by Niobe's death and the discovery of her affair. He curses the children for hiding the truth and disappears into the streets, leaving them with Lyde. Erastes Fulmen takes advantage of his absence to abduct the household. Pullo returns from the countryside after hearing that Caesar has been killed and finds his friend unable to face even Niobe's burial. He helps Vorenus through the funeral while Caesar's own public farewell turns the city against the assassins, forcing Brutus and Cassius to leave. The soldiers trace the missing family to Erastes. He tells Vorenus that he has killed them, and Vorenus beheads him, believing his children lost as well as his wife.
