Lucas and Keith return to Tree Hill after Dan’s heart attack. Lucas learns Nathan and Haley married, and Deb struggles to accept their decision. Lucas and Nathan try to rebuild their brotherhood, but Lucas’s worry about inheriting Dan’s heart condition draws him closer to Dan. After his test results, Lucas moves into Dan’s home, straining his ties with Karen and Nathan. He and Andy investigate the dealership and uncover records of Dan’s financial fraud, giving Lucas evidence against his father while Dan tries to keep control through money and family promises.
Haley’s singing opens a path beyond Tree Hill when Chris Keller invites her on tour. Nathan asks her to choose between the tour and their marriage; Haley leaves, and the couple’s separation unsettles both of them. Brooke pursues student council and a life beyond dating, while Peyton reconnects with Jake and baby Jenny. Keith plans to marry Jules, but Karen and Andy uncover that Dan paid Jules to make Keith fall for her, ending the engagement. Meanwhile Nathan’s parents’ marriage continues to collapse, and Dan’s business dealings entangle the adults around him.
A racing crash leaves Nathan unconscious, and his dream of an alternate family life pushes him to reconsider Dan’s influence. After recovering, he weighs the High Flyers opportunity against his parents’ needs. Deb returns from rehabilitation and plans to leave with him, but Dan uses the dealership’s black books and her role in the business to stop them. Lucas tells Brooke he loves her before she leaves for summer, and Peyton learns the reporter who approached her is her birth mother. Nathan decides to go to High Flyers; Haley appears at his door. Dan is trapped inside the dealership when it catches fire, and the season does not reveal who set it.
