Instrumentality continues through Shinji's examination of himself and the other people whose voices shape his thoughts. He insists that piloting gives him his only value, believing that without the Eva he would be abandoned. The questioning challenges both that belief and his certainty that everyone hates him. Misato, Rei and Asuka reveal similar fears of loneliness and rejection, undermining the idea that his pain belongs to him alone. Shinji has tried to protect himself through obedience and withdrawal, yet neither gives him a stable identity. He is asked to consider how much of the world he experiences comes from the judgments he has made about himself.
A blank space briefly offers complete freedom, but leaves Shinji with nothing against which to recognize his own form. Adding a ground beneath him removes one freedom while giving him something to stand on. An imagined school life then places familiar people in ordinary roles, with Shinji as a student whose existence does not depend on piloting. Seeing that possibility allows him to imagine other versions of his life and other ways of understanding himself. Shinji recognizes that the hatred he has directed at himself can change, and that he may learn to accept who he is. The enclosed world breaks apart, familiar faces congratulate him, and he answers their welcome with thanks.
