Bong-hwan briefly returns to awareness in his modern body while doctors fight to save him. He cannot move or communicate, and the visit brings no freedom from his predicament. In Joseon, So-yong lies unresponsive as Cheoljong demands help from the royal physician. The queen's collapse gives the people around her another reason to suspect poison or a deliberate attack, rather than the strange connection between her body and Bong-hwan's.
Byeong-in follows clues from the attack in the street and becomes more suspicious of the king's companions. When he learns about So-yong's condition, protecting her takes priority. He exposes the Queen Dowager's forbidden ritual, bringing the Grand Queen Dowager into a confrontation with her rival. The argument over who endangered the queen becomes entangled with another dispute: whether Cheoljong or Byeong-in has the right to decide where she should recover and who may approach her.
The queen is moved to her family home, where Bong-hwan wakes to an anxious father and a stream of attention from physicians. Leaving the palace has changed his surroundings without solving the body swap. Contact with familiar objects now brings back memories that belong to So-yong, making his sense of ownership over the body less certain. Cheoljong, meanwhile, sheds more of his harmless public manner as he prepares with his own men, keeping his wider purpose hidden from the court.
