Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for the original live-action series.
Rowan Atkinson’s original live-action Mr. Bean follows a man whose small daily objectives repeatedly become everybody else’s problem. There is no continuous mystery or final confrontation: the stories move between errands, outings and the flat where he keeps Teddy. In the opening episode, an examination goes wrong because Bean has prepared for the wrong mathematics questions. He attempts to copy his neighbour, changes into swimming trunks at the beach without exposing himself, and struggles through a church service. His solutions require far more effort than the ordinary tasks he is trying to complete.
That pattern reaches into his social life. A birthday dinner becomes an elaborate exercise in hiding food he does not want to eat, while a cinema visit with his girlfriend turns into a struggle with a frightening film. At the dentist, Bean accidentally sedates the dentist and takes over his own treatment. Christmas brings a disrupted shop Nativity display, an improvised turn conducting a Salvation Army band, and a turkey stuck on his head. A hotel break produces competition with another guest, spoiled oysters and an undignified attempt to get back into his locked room.
The later stories expand the chaos without giving Bean a conventional transformation. A New Year’s party is followed by home improvements involving an explosive approach to painting. A visit to the funfair leaves him looking after a baby, eventually returned to its mother. Miniature golf escapes the course as he follows the ball across town. The original collection finishes with Hair by Mr. Bean of London, taking his interference into a hair salon and entering Teddy in a pet show. These are self-contained comic disasters; the animated adventures and cinema films belong to separate productions.
