Monk

Season 2

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Monk and Sharona return to a steady run of police cases, including an English teacher’s death at Trudy’s former school and a skydiver whose autopsy suggests he drowned in midair. The work also takes them to Mexico, where missing luggage, scarce bottled water and apparent attempts on Monk’s life complicate his search. At home, Sharona continues to keep Monk connected to people as well as evidence, while Stottlemeyer and Disher turn to him when a case resists ordinary police methods.

Some cases bring the team closer to family troubles. Monk and Captain Stottlemeyer investigate the death of an extremely old man while Leland’s marriage strains; Monk later reunites uneasily with his agoraphobic brother Ambrose when a local murder draws them into the brother’s suspicions about a neighbor. Sharona’s own relatives and relationships also enter the cases, from helping clear her actress sister after a death onstage to going undercover with Monk as a married couple at a therapy retreat. They uncover a murder tied to a hidden gold cache while also investigating the new man in Randy Disher’s mother’s life.

The season closes in prison, where a death-row inmate is poisoned shortly before his execution. Monk initially wants to leave because he cannot tolerate the conditions, but Dale Biederbeck offers information about Trudy’s murder if Monk finds the killer. Monk accepts, follows a prison librarian’s lead and goes undercover among inmates, where he shares a cell with a quadruple murderer. Dale reveals that Trudy herself was the intended target, overturning Monk’s belief that the bomb was meant for him. He also points Monk towards New York, giving his personal investigation a new destination.
