Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

In the final season, Malcolm approaches graduation and tries to manage relationships, school and the prospect of leaving home. A trip to Burning Man sends him and Reese hitchhiking toward the festival, where Malcolm becomes interested in a healer while Reese embraces the event’s lack of rules. Back at school, Malcolm is pulled into tangled romances and later organizes Morp, an alternative dance for students left out of prom. He wants an alternative to the school’s popularity contests but still makes the evening awkward for his friends.

Reese is adjusting to civilian life after the Army and struggles to find a direction. His old Army friend Abby visits and develops feelings for Lois, while Reese’s fights at school bring Lois into the conflict when she retaliates against girls who humiliated him. He takes jobs delivering meat and later returns to a meat plant, where meeting a vegetarian complicates the work. Francis also faces a late change: after a year of sobriety, he invites the family to an AA meeting, and the season later finds him broke and pushed toward getting a regular job by Dewey.

Lois refuses a lucrative software job on Malcolm’s behalf: she expects him to attend Harvard, struggle and eventually become a president who understands families like theirs. Hal scrambles to raise money for college, and Malcolm prepares to graduate as valedictorian while deciding what kind of life he will accept. Reese moves in with Craig and becomes a janitor at his former high school; Dewey and Jamie carry on the younger brothers’ mischief; and Francis has a stable job he has kept secret from Lois. Lois reveals she is pregnant again, while Malcolm leaves for Harvard and works as a janitor to pay his way.
