Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
The season moves Francis’s story from Alaska to a dude ranch, where he and Piama work for Otto and Gretchen. Francis has found a steadier place and begins handling real responsibilities, but Hal’s visit makes him uneasy about how capable his eldest son has become. Malcolm starts high school and still turns ordinary school pressures into crises. He tries suppressing complaints after noticing that bad things follow them, then discovers that silence can help him get back on the basketball team while causing other problems to go unspoken.
Back home, Lois’s pregnancy becomes the season’s long-running change. She learns she is expecting another child, and the family adjusts around her increasingly difficult pregnancy while the boys keep creating emergencies. Hal struggles with jobs, old friends and the household budget; Reese gets himself into trouble at school and at home; Dewey’s place among the older brothers remains precarious. Francis’s ranch life intersects with the family during visits, where Malcolm and Reese worry that he has become too responsible, while ranch mishaps show that adulthood has not removed his impulsiveness.
Near the end, Lois goes into labor and the family’s plans collapse into a frantic effort to get through the birth. Jamie is born as Hal and Lois’s fifth child, adding a baby to a house already organized around competing needs and noisy loyalties. Francis and Piama remain at the ranch, where he is useful to Otto and Gretchen but still gets pulled into eccentric schemes, including a UFO story meant to help the business. The season closes with the family adjusting to its newest member rather than resolving the boys’ ongoing rivalries.
