Angus MacGyver begins as a DXS troubleshooter sent where a practical mind can save lives. In the pilot, an explosion traps scientists underground with a spreading acid leak; Mac works through laboratory hazards to get them out. His next assignments take him to a Burmese crash site and Budapest, where a young girl has stolen a watch carrying secret information, then to a South American dictatorship, helping journalist Kate Connelly escape with evidence against its officials.
Cases range from recovering diamonds stolen from a famine-relief charity to protecting a witness who wants to visit his dying mother. In the Amazon, Mac and plantation owner Trumbo face a swarm of ants; in Wyoming, an oil-well fire threatens Mac’s old friends. A fishing trip with his estranged grandfather Harry turns into a fight for survival when assassins target them, forcing the two men to cooperate despite their history.
Later missions leave Mac little room to improvise. Foreign agents capture and inject him with a hallucinogenic poison, giving him six hours to find an antidote. At a nuclear plant, stolen uranium and an old girlfriend’s investigation bring a reactor disaster close. He also races to disarm two bombs aboard a Pacific cruise ship, exposes a traitor inside DXS, and helps Pete Thornton enter a Soviet mental hospital to free a political prisoner.
The season closes with Mac and Pete tracking Piedra, a disguised professional killer assigned to assassinate Archbishop Fierro. Mac takes Piedra’s place to intercept the instructions, but Piedra escapes, kills his guards and reaches the convent disguised as a nun. With the archbishop still intent on speaking, Mac wears his robes as a decoy. Piedra’s poisoned dart misses; Mac trips him with a hose, and Piedra falls onto the dart and dies. Fierro then addresses the crowd as planned.
