The Lie

Spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes of Lost.

A flashback aboard Penny's boat shows Hurley objecting to the survivors' decision to lie about their rescue. Jack argues that the story will protect the people left behind, and Hurley cannot persuade the others to support him. Years later in Los Angeles, that agreement weighs on Hurley as he drives the unconscious Sayid away from the safehouse and tries to avoid arrest for killings he did not commit.

Hurley sees the dead Ana Lucia, who warns him to pull himself together and avoid the police. He takes Sayid to his parents' house, where his father helps conceal them before bringing Sayid to Jack for treatment. Hurley finally tells his mother that their public account is false. When Ben arrives offering to reunite him with the others and return to the island, Hurley follows Sayid's warning about Ben and surrenders to the police instead.

On the island, the stranded survivors struggle to find food and build a fire after losing their supplies. Charlotte has headaches and trouble remembering details. Flaming arrows strike the beach, killing Frogurt and other survivors and forcing the group into the jungle. Armed men capture Sawyer and Juliet, but Locke intervenes before they can injure Juliet. In the mainland storyline, Ben leaves Locke's body with Jill at a butcher shop, then meets Hawking, who warns that there is little time left to arrange the return.
