Miles is sent into restricted territory to collect the body of a Dharma worker and deliver it to Pierre Chang at the Orchid. Hurley joins the trip with food for the work crew and discovers the corpse in the van. Miles says the worker died when a metal filling tore through his head. The conversation reveals Miles's ability to learn from the dead, although his experience differs from Hurley's conversations with them.
Miles reluctantly admits that Chang is his father. He has avoided approaching him because his mother said Chang abandoned them and never cared. Hurley encourages him to reconsider and compares their situation to the family conflict in the Star Wars films he is trying to write from memory. Later, Miles watches Chang reading to his infant self at home. Chang interrupts that glimpse of family life by asking for help at the dock, where Daniel returns aboard the submarine.
Flashbacks follow Miles discovering his ability as a child, questioning his dying mother and taking paid work speaking for the dead. Naomi recruits him for the freighter after testing what he can learn from a body. Bram's group tries to dissuade him from working for Widmore, but Miles asks for more money instead. In the 1977 barracks, Roger grows suspicious about Ben's disappearance. Phil finds surveillance footage linking Sawyer to the removal, so Sawyer knocks him unconscious and asks Juliet for rope to restrain him.
