Nikki stumbles onto the beach and collapses, leaving Hurley and Sawyer to struggle over the words she tried to say. They find Paulo similarly motionless in the jungle and investigate the pair's apparent deaths. A walkie-talkie makes Sawyer suspect a connection with the Others, while his earlier argument with Nikki draws suspicion toward him. During the inquiry, Charlie admits to Sun that he was responsible for her attempted abduction. Sun later confronts Sawyer over his role in that deception and rejects the diamonds he offers her. The survivors prepare a funeral for Nikki and Paulo without understanding that the pair have been paralyzed rather than killed.
Flashbacks follow Nikki and Paulo before and after the crash. In Sydney, Paulo poisons a wealthy television producer, allowing them to steal his diamonds. On the island, Paulo recovers the missing gems but hides that discovery from Nikki. He conceals them in the Pearl station and overhears Ben and Juliet planning how to manipulate Jack. Nikki eventually realizes Paulo has been lying and releases a paralyzing spider onto him so she can recover the diamonds. Other spiders bite her as well. She buries the gems and reaches the beach, trying to explain her paralysis. At the funeral, Sawyer pours the diamonds into the grave. Nikki's eyes open as he and Hurley shovel earth onto both bodies, unaware they are burying them alive.
