Claire notices tagged seabirds and proposes attaching a rescue message to one, hoping researchers will eventually find it. Charlie initially supports her, then withdraws after Desmond intervenes. Claire recruits Sun and Jin to help catch a bird, only for Desmond to frighten the flock away with a gunshot. She follows him as he catches a bird and demands an explanation. Desmond reveals that he foresaw Charlie dying while attempting to retrieve one from dangerous rocks. Claire tells Charlie that she now knows about the visions. Together, they attach her message and release the bird, giving the camp another attempt at reaching the outside world.
Flashbacks show Claire driving during an argument with her mother before a crash leaves her mother comatose. Christian Shephard pays the hospital bills and tells Claire that he is her father. Claire resists his suggestion to consider ending life support and refuses to learn his name. Later, pregnant, she visits her mother and apologizes for their argument. Elsewhere on the island, Kate, Sayid, Locke and Rousseau escort Mikhail toward the barracks. They discover a security fence made of pylons. Locke pushes Mikhail through it, causing him to collapse and bleed. The group crosses above the barrier using a fallen tree. On reaching the settlement, they see Jack happily playing football with Tom rather than trying to escape.
