An opening flashback shows Juliet hosting a book club in a suburban settlement. An apparent earthquake sends everyone outside, where they watch Oceanic 815 break apart overhead. Ben, previously known to the survivors as Henry Gale, immediately dispatches Ethan and Goodwin to infiltrate the crash sites. Jack's own flashbacks follow his divorce from Sarah. Obsessively searching for her new partner, he suspects Christian, follows him to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and attacks him.
In the present, the Others hold Jack, Kate and Sawyer separately. Kate receives a shower and a dress before a beach breakfast with Ben, who makes her wear handcuffs and warns that unpleasant days lie ahead. Sawyer wakes in an outdoor cage. A neighboring prisoner, Karl, releases him, but both are caught. Sawyer eventually solves the cage's food dispenser, then shares his fish biscuit with Kate when she is placed beside him.
Juliet questions Jack inside the Hydra station, offering food and claiming to know about his life. He seizes her and forces open a door despite warnings that the station is underwater. The resulting flood makes them cooperate to reach safety, after which Juliet knocks him unconscious. When Jack wakes, she displays a thick file about him. Rather than demand Sarah's new partner's identity, he asks whether she is happy. Juliet says yes, and Ben congratulates her afterward.
