Flashbacks follow Rose and Bernard from meeting in the snow to his marriage proposal. Rose tells him that she has terminal cancer, but he still wants to marry her. During their Australian honeymoon, Bernard takes her to a healer despite her reluctance. The man says he cannot help, yet Rose tells Bernard the visit worked so that he will stop searching. At the airport, she sees Locke using a wheelchair, giving her knowledge the other survivors lack.
On the island, Bernard organises an S.O.S. sign, convinced the group has stopped trying to be rescued. His demanding instructions drive the volunteers away, and Rose resists the project. She eventually admits lying about the healer, then says she has felt free of her illness since the crash and fears it will return if they leave. Bernard accepts her wish to stay. Rose also reassures the injured Locke in a way that acknowledges his earlier inability to walk.
Jack takes Kate into the jungle, hoping to negotiate an exchange of the prisoner for Walt. A doll triggers one of Rousseau's traps, leaving them suspended together in a net until they free themselves. Kate tells Jack about the abandoned medical station and the disguises she found. They reach the clearing where Jack previously confronted the Others, but his calls bring no answer. Instead, Michael emerges from the trees and collapses before them, ending their wait with another urgent problem.
